As the cannabis industry enters a boom period, with a constantly-expanding array of products and an increase in mainstream attention, it can be daunting for someone new to cannabis use to parse the glut of information and figure out what flower, edible, tincture, vape (and on and on and…) is right for them. Today I want to do my part by talking about a little molecule that’s enjoying some increased popularity. This molecule is cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD.

CBD is one of the many cannabinoids naturally found within the cannabis plant. Some strains (such as ACDC or Harlequin) produce higher concentrations of CBD relative to other cannabinoids, and CBD is also extracted to create high-CBD or CBD-only products. While tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD is considered to be non-psychoactive. This means it does not produce the “high” – the euphoric feelings – commonly associated with cannabis. Yet CBD has numerous other effects. It is touted for relieving chronic pain, anxiety, and inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Many of these claims are being validated by scientific research. We’ll most likely see more studies in the coming years, as legalization efforts reduce barriers to researchers’ access to cannabis for study, and as the pharmaceutical industry looks to exploit the therapeutic potential of the plant (for better or worse).

Due to its non-psychoactive nature, CBD-rich products are ideal for someone who is interested in the benefits of cannabis but wants to avoid any intoxication or impairment. However, as our own Sarah might say, “just because it isn’t psychoactive doesn’t mean it won’t have a noticeable effect.” It’s always best to try any new cannabis product in a safe, calm environment.
